Split info
Tourist info Split
Split is the second-largest city in Croatia with 170,000 inhabitants and the largest city, cultural, economic and tourist centre of Dalmatia. It is located on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea between Kaštela Bay and Split Channel. Split is one of the oldest cities in Dalmatia — although traditionally considered a little more than 1,700 years old, when the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 305 AD built the world-famous Diocletian's Palace, the city was in fact founded as a Greek colony Aspalathos in the 4th century BC, that is more than 2,400 years ago. Because of its long and rich history and cultural heritage, in 1979 the historic centre of Split with Diocletian's Palace was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Sights of Split
Walking through the historic centre of the city it is possible to travel through time and admire perfectly preserved examples of ancient architecture like Peristyle and Diocletian's cellars, medieval Romanesque churches and Gothic palaces, and the Renaissance portals of noble houses. Split is also the ideal starting point for the islands, as the Split port is the starting point for most of the central Dalmatian islands of Brač, Hvar, Vis and Korčula. Nearby Trogir also has its own UNESCO-protected old town. Find all information on the official Visit Split website.
Beaches and nature in Split
Split is full of beaches — from the famous sandy Bačvice to stone isolated coves around the entire Marjan peninsula where you can relax and enjoy the true Mediterranean atmosphere. When you get tired of city noise and tourists, there is Marjan hill with its forests, trails for running, hiking and cycling, and recreational facilities. Private accommodation by the sea in Split offers apartments and rooms — you can stay in ancient stone houses within the old town or in modern apartments along the beach.

Split abounds with affordable private accommodation — apartments are offered at every turn, so you can spend your holiday in the historic town centre or in modern apartments by the beach. Also explore the rest of the Split-Dalmatia riviera with its islands and historic towns. Welcome to Split!
