Poreč Coat of Arms

Poreč is a city and a popular tourist destination in the county of Istria in Croatia. It is located on the west coast of Istria in a beautiful harbour protected from the sea and waves by the islet of Sveti Nikola. The Old Town and historical centre is situated on a peninsula, while the newer part of town and hotel complexes are located along the coast north and south of the old town. This is the second-largest city in Istria, after Pula, with about 17,000 residents. Poreč has been inhabited since ancient times — in the 2nd century BC, a Roman castrum was raised on the peninsula, and the Euphrasian Basilica, built in the 6th century, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the only completely preserved monument of that era in the world. From the 13th until the end of the 18th century, Poreč was under Venetian rule, when beautiful Gothic and Baroque palaces Zuccato, Parisi-Gonan were built. In the middle of the 19th century, Austrian aristocracy discovered it, and in 1910 the first hotel Riviera was built.
