Diocletian palace in Split is one of the best-preserved monuments of ancient Roman architecture in Europe, so it is no wonder that it is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The palace was built more than 1700 years ago according to the wish of the Roman emperor Diocletian, who, after his retirement from the imperial throne, lived in it until his death (316 AD). Diocletian palace was built as a luxury summer residence while part of the palace was intended for a military camp (castrum). The majority of the palace, walls, and buildings have been preserved to this day. The most famous buildings are the cathedral of St. Duje (formerly mausoleum of Diocletian ), Peristil (central square of the palace), one of the most beautiful European monuments Jupiter temple (preserved in its original form), basements of Diocletian palace, Vestibul (old imperial lobby with open circular dome), and 4 city gates (made of iron, gold, silver and brass). The entire old town of Split exudes the characteristic architecture of the Middle Ages - stone houses and narrow stone streets that look like a maze.
