Susak Info
Susak is a small sandy island in the Kvarner bay, around 8 kilometers away from the island of Lošinj. Its geology differs from other islands in the Adriatic sea as it was formed of fine yellowish sand lying on limestone rocks. The island of Susak has a surface area of only 4 km2, so the best way to explore it is by bike or by foot.
The first people who inhabited the island of Susak were Illyrians followed by the Romans. The remains of the old Roman defense tower have remained until today on the highest peak of the island. Benedictines came to the island in the 10th century and have built a monastery that had been in use until the 18th century. At the end of the Second World War, almost 2,000 people lived on Susak. However, that lasted until the sixties when a major emigration wave hit the island and many people emigrated to the United States. Today, although the trend is slowly changing because of tourism, Susak still has less than 200 permanent residents.
The island of Susak has attractive sandy beaches - Bok bay, Baldarka bay and Spiaza bay among others. Be sure to explore the old medieval village Gornje Selo and remarkable views from the lighthouse on Garba. The village has several restaurants, bars, and taverns where you can try local specialties and excellent wines.
Considering that it is a small and remote island, Susak has solid connections with surrounding islands. There are daily boat lines from Mali Lošinj and daily catamaran lines from Rijeka. Since the island is very small there is no traffic and cars on it, while the accommodation is offered only in private apartments, holiday homes and rooms.
Climate & Weather
Susak has a Mediterranean climate - summers are warm and winters are rainy. In July and August, the average temperature of the air is above 24 °C, while the temperature of the sea is above 20 °C. Susak is a sunny island, ideal for summer holidays with more than 2,500 sunny hours a year.
