Osijek is a city and a regional center of Slavonia in the eastern part of continental Croatia. It is situated in a fertile plain on the right bank of the Drava river near the mouth of the Danube river. Osijek is the largest city in Slavonia and the fourth largest city in Croatia with around 100,000 inhabitants. The city is the economic, administrative and cultural center of the Osijek-Baranja county. For the first time in the history, the name of the town in the Hungarian version Eszek and the German Esseg is mentioned in the 12th century. During the Middle Ages, it was a rich merchant and craft town. The town experienced rapid development and great economic and cultural boom in turn of the 19th century.
