Ist info
Ist is a small island in the Zadar County in Croatia. Its area is only about 10 km2 and is located in the north of Dalmatia, north of the islands of Molat and west of the island Škarda. The only place on the island also bears the name Ist, and the nearest major town is Zadar with which it is well connected by ferry and catamaran lines. It was first mentioned in the 14th century under the Illyrian name Ost, and until the 18th century, it was under the direction and part of the parish of the neighboring larger island of Molat. During the 19th and early 20th century inhabitants of Ist were known sailors, and they had a large fleet of commercial sailing ships. Today, on the Ist lives only about 200 permanent residents, but other than olive and wine-growing, the main source of income is tourism.
In the center of village Ist is a large sand and gravel beach next to a pine forest where you can enjoy in the shade with your favorite book. The place is very quiet and peaceful because here is not allowed motor vehicles, and is ideal for a getaway from the city noise.
