Klis is a small town and municipality in the Split-Dalmatia County. It lies between the mountains of Mosor in the east and Kozjak in the west. From the town of Split, it is only a little over 5 kilometers away. On top of the hill is situated a well-known medieval fort, which is also a symbol of the town. Town of Klis was named after steep and tall cliffs where the fort was built. Because of its prominent position and connection between Split and the Dalmatian hinterland, Klis has long been a strategically important place, especially since it was very difficult to conquer. Klis still represents a connection between Split, Solin, Kaštela and the Dalmatian Zagora because here passes both the old road and the new motorway.
Sights of Klis
The medieval fortress of Klis was a significant place for the defense of Dalmatia from the Turks, which was briefly captured but soon returned to Croatian rule. Tourism is mainly developed thanks to the imposing fortress which offers a magnificent view of Split and this part of Dalmatia.
