Tourist info Korčula - Vela Luka
Vela Luka is a small town and seat of the eponymous municipality in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. This picturesque town is situated on the western side of the island of Korčula in a deep and large bay. Vela Luka developed at the beginning of the 19th century thanks to a deep and sheltered bay in which is located the shipyard called Greben and several small industrial plants. Vela Luka owes its name to čakavian dialect which means large port. With its 4300 residents, Vela Luka is the second largest town on the Adriatic islands and a safe anchorage and harbor for boaters. With many apartments in private family houses, Vela Luka has several hotels and a medical center called Kalos (for rheumatic diseases and rehabilitation). The economy is mainly based on agriculture, fishing, and tourism. One of the biggest attractions near Vela Luka is Vela Spila cave, which is located on the southern slope of Mount Pin, at 130 m above Kale cove, and is one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites in Europe. The mild Mediterranean climate, clean sea, interesting and rich cultural heritage, various sports, recreational and entertainment facilities and warm-hearted and hospitable people make Vela Luka an attractive tourist destination.
