Tourist info Makarska
Makarska is a city and a tourist center in Croatia which is situated between the mountain slope of Biokovo and the Adriatic Sea. It is part of the Split-Dalmatia county and has a population of 13,834 residents. The city is known for its long pebbles beaches and palm trees, where there are numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants with gastronomic specialties, and plenty of entertainment for children and adults. The center of Makarska is the old town with narrow cobbled streets and the main square with the church of St. Mark and the Franciscan monastery which includes a Pinacotheca, the library, and the unique Malacological Museum. Makarska is also the center and the most visited place of the Makarska Riviera, which stretches along 60 km between Brela and Gradac.
The old town and the Franciscan monastery
The old town of Makarska is one of the best-preserved examples of Dalmatian urban architecture — narrow cobbled streets lead to the lively main square Kačićev trg with the monumental 18th-century church of St. Mark. Within the Franciscan monastery lies the Malacological Museum, unique in this part of Europe, housing a collection of over 3,000 species of shells and molluscs from around the world. Nearby stands the small church of St. Peter on the cape that separates Makarska harbour from the open sea — one of the most photogenic spots on the entire riviera. Makarska is also an ideal base for day trips: Omiš, Biokovo Nature Park and Split are all reachable within an hour's drive.
Beaches in Makarska
Makarska is famous for one of the longest urban pebble beaches on the Adriatic — the town beach stretches almost 1.5 km from the centre towards the hotel complex, shaded by dense pine trees. Particularly popular is Nugal beach, a hidden wild cove between Makarska and Brela accessible only by a hiking trail — crystal-clear water and untouched nature make it one of the most beautiful beaches in Dalmatia. On the northern part of the riviera you will find Donja Luka, ideal for families with children thanks to its shallow sandy bottom and well-equipped facilities. The climate in Makarska is typically Mediterranean with more than 2,750 sunny hours per year and average sea temperatures above 24°C in July and August.
Tourist attractions in Makarska
Makarska is an ideal base for exploring Biokovo Nature Park — the mountain massif rising directly above the city to 1,762 m offers spectacular hiking trails and the panoramic Biokovo Skywalk with views over the entire riviera. The botanical garden on the Biokovo slopes harbours endemic plant species unique to this area. In town, the Makarska City Museum is well worth a visit, with a rich collection on the life and culture of the Makarska coast, alongside an open-air stage hosting concerts, klapa evenings and folk performances every July and August. Full event listings are available on the official Makarska Tourist Board website.
Sports, gastronomy and summer events
Makarska offers many amenities and each guest can find something for themselves — from sports and tennis courts, water sports (sailing, diving, kayaking, kite-surfing) to extreme sports like paragliding and hang-gliding from the slopes of Biokovo. The gastronomic scene offers outstanding Dalmatian specialties — fresh fish, octopus under the peka, date mussels and local plavac mali wine are just a part of what local konobas and restaurants serve. Makarska also hosts numerous summer events: the Makarska Cultural Summer, sailing regattas, fishing festivals and open-air concerts.
