Vir is a tiny island on the Croatian coast of the Adriatic sea in the county of Zadar in Croatia. Its area is 22 km2 and is located 25 km north of the city of Zadar. With the mainland is connected with a bridge built in the last century. The main town on the island, the town of Vir, is also the center of the municipality and home to about 1500 inhabitants. On the island, there are two smaller places, Lozice and Torovi. In historical documents, Vir was first mentioned in the 11th century in the charter of King Petar Krešimir IV, in which the island is called Ueru (Vera) - ancient Mediterranean word for pasture.
