Buje

Buje is a picturesque small town in Istria, Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the Istrian peninsula, near the border with Slovenia, and only ten kilometers away from the sea and the tourist town of Umag. The old town has developed on top of the hill and it offers panoramic views over the Istrian peninsula. It has been historically known as a guard of Istria. Buje has a long and rich history, it was inhabited by ancient Histri, after them Romans, and in the 7th century, Croatians and Italians. A small fortress is situated on the top of the hill. The castle was first mentioned in the 10th century as Castrum Bugle, which was then under the administration of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. At the beginning of the 15th century, Buje came under Venetian rule, under which it remained until the end of the 18th century. The following century and a half it was under Austrian rule, and finally, after World War 2 was merged into Croatia.
