Motovun is a picturesque medieval town in the county of Istria in Croatia. It is located in the interior of Istria, on a 270-meter high hill near the towns of Buzet and Pazin, about twenty kilometers from the western coast of Istria. The area was inhabited since prehistoric times when it was inhabited by the ancient Celts and Illyrians. It was named after the Celtic word "Montona", which means city in the mountains. In the 10th and 11th century it belonged to Poreč bishops, and from the 12th to the 18th century it was under Venetian rule, when it was developed and it received its current appearance. In this period were built massive walls which surround the city, and today serve as a promenade from which is beautiful view on all four sides of central Istria. Within the city are well-preserved towers, city gates, stone streets and stone houses that contain elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance, which is a typical example of Venetian colonial architecture. Today, the town has about 1,000 inhabitants and the backbone of the economy along with agriculture is tourism thanks to its unique location, beautiful nature and the medieval charm that has remained to this day.
