Senj Senj is ancient fishing and tourist town in Lika-Senj county in Croatia. It is located on the east coast of Adriatic sea, at the foot of the Velebit mountain opposite the island of Krk. Senj area was inhabited since prehistoric times when here lived ancient Illyrian people Japodes, followed by Liburnians and Romans. In the 7th century Croats settled here and in the 12th century was founded Senj diocese. In the 13th century it came under the administration of the Frankopans, and in the 16th century was built fortress Nehaj for protection from Turks. Only after passing of Turkish threat in the 18th century and by building Josephine road that linked Senj to Karlovac began the era of development and prosperity. Today Senj has about 8,000 inhabitants who are engaged in fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism.
