Ilovik Info
Ilovik is a small island located in the Lošinj archipelago, one kilometer south of Lošinj. It has a surface of 5.5 km2. The only inhabited settlement on the island has the same name - Ilovik. Its name arrives from a type of clay that prevails on it. 300 m wide and 2.5 km long channel separates Ilovik from the island of Sveti Petar, a small uninhabited island with a small local cemetery and Benedictine monastery. Both islands are protected from stronger winds which makes them a safe zone for local fishermen and sailors.
The island of Ilovik has many historic ruins and cultural traces of Illiryans and Romans including numismatic objects, old walls, sarcophaguses, and underwater archeological sites. Today the island has less than 200 inhabitants. On Ilovik there is no bank, ATM, and pharmacy.
Ilovik is specific because it has 2 eucalyptus trees that are more than 100 years old. It is rich with Mediterannean vegetation, palm trees, flowers, oleander, roses why it is often called - the island of flowers. Paržine beach is a beautiful sandy beach located on the southeast side of Illovik.
The island is well connected by regular lines from Mali Lošinj and Rijeka. However, it is more often reached by small boats from Mrtvaška cove (south Lošnj). During the summer, many excursion boats from Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj visits Ilovik. There are no cars on the island, while accommodation is available only in private apartments, holiday homes, and rooms.
Climate & Weather
Because of its vicinity, Ilovik has a very similar climate to the island of Lošinj. Mediterranean climate prevails with warm summers and rainy winters. In July, the average air temperature is 24.5 °C. The sea temperature in the summer months is above 20 °C which makes the sea ideal for swimming. Similar to the surrounding islands, Illovik has more than 2,500 sunny hours a year.
