Kaprije Info

Tourist guide island of Kaprije

The island of Kaprije is located just one hour from Šibenik in the Šibenik archipelago. This picturesque island covered with pine forests has a total surface of 7 km2. The only settlement on the island has the same name as the island - Kaprije. The name of the island comes from popular Mediterranean spice - caper which used to cover the entire island. The highest peak of the island of Kaprije is 129 meters high Velika Glavica. This island is specific because cars are not allowed, which makes it an ideal destination for all guests who want to enjoy a peaceful Mediterranean atmosphere and clean air.

In the 14th and 15th century the island of Kaprije was owned by noble families from Šibenik. First settlers from Šibenik and the surrounding area came to the island in the 16th and 17th centuries because of the Turkish invasion. During that period was built the church of St. Peter. After the end of the invasions, the majority of refugees returned to the mainland and some of them remained to live on Kaprije. Today, this small island has only 150 permanent inhabitants who are mainly engaged in fishing, tourism, and agriculture (production of wine and olive oil).

Kaprije has around 20 attractive coves. The best beaches on the island are cove Luka St. Peter or Luka Kaprije near the village of Kaprije, cove Mala Nozdra and cove Velika Nozdra. Walk around the island and enjoy beautiful surroundings of caper, grape groves, and olive groves. For those looking for active holidays, we recommend trekking, walking, riding a bike, and diving (near the island at 55 meters below sea level lies a shipwreck from World War 2). The island has everything you need for a perfect vacation including a local grocery store, several bars and restaurants, and a post office.

Kaprije can be reached by ferry or catamaran from Šibenik which leaves from Šibenik several times a day. Kaprije cove in the southwest offers natural shelter from winds to many sailors who are looking for safe harbor after visiting national park Kornati. As cars and motor vehicles are not allowed on the island, visiting Kaprije will help you to escape from everyday noise, crowds, and city smog. Accommodation is exclusively offered by private renters in apartments, holiday homes, and rooms.
