Lastovo Info
Lastovo is the biggest island of the Lastovo archipelago which consists of 46 islands. The archipelago is located in Dubrovnik-Neretva county, in south Croatia. The island has a total area of around 53 km2. The highest point of the island of Lastovo is Hum which is 417 meters high. Its coast is steep and indented, while the island has many hills. More than 60% of the island is covered by forests of pine, holm oak, and the Mediterranean underbrush. Beautiful and preserved nature is just part of the reasons why Lastovo became a nature park.
In total, the island has around 800 permanent inhabitants. Lastovo has a rich historical heritage as it has been inhabited for more than a thousand years - from Illyrians, followed by Greeks and Romans to Croats. Ancient archaeological sites from the Romans were found and in the Ublim bay and have been preserved until today.
The entire Lastovo archipelago is nature park thanks to preserved nature, unique and remote location, clear and clean Adriatic sea, and rich underwater life. Nature park consists of a group of islands, rocks, and islets with a total area of almost 200 km2 (53 km2 on land and 143 km2 at the sea). Seawaters around Lastovo are deep while underwater life is extremely rich with crabs, octopuses, lobsters, and other fish.
In the town of Lastovo, there are beautiful stone houses with decorated chimneys called "fumari" (from the 15th and 16th centuries). Lighthouses on Lastovo are also the famous attraction of the island - Glavat lighthouse, Struga lighthouse (near Skrivena Luka), and Sušac lighthouse on the small island of Sušac. Lastovo has so many beautiful beaches and coves. The best beaches on the island are Skrivena Luka cove, beautiful sandy beach on the small island of Saplun, Zaglav, Pionir, and Perna in the settlement of Ubli, Jurjeva Luka, and Borova cove near Pasadur. For those looking for active holidays, Lastovo has a wide network of interconnected cycling paths and walking trails. We also recommend visiting the island’s highest point Hum, which offers remarkable views of the Lastovo archipelago, the island of Mljet, the island of Korčula, the peninsula of Pelješac, and the open sea.
Lastovo is connected by regular ferry and catamaran lines with Split (the journey lasts around 3 hours) while the catamaran from Dubrovnik connects Lastovo 2 times a week (only during the tourist season). Accommodation is mainly offered by private renters - we recommend staying in private apartments, holiday homes, or rooms.
