Županja
Tourist info Županja
Županja is a town in Vukovar-Srijem County, located on the Sava River in the far east of Croatia (Slavonia). There are about 12,000 inhabitants in Županja, and they are mostly engaged in agricultural production and processing and the wood industry (due to the nearby Spačva forest). Županja was first mentioned in the 16th century as Zapana Blacio (Županje Blato) and was created by merging several smaller villages into a single city, which developed intensively after the victory over the Turks in the 18th century when it became part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and as part of the established Slavonian military border in which the military regiment was stationed. Today, Županja is an excellent starting point for research and getting to know the culture, traditions, and customs of Slavonia and this part of Croatia. We recommend that you visit the Stjepan Gruber Homeland Museum. The museum includes interesting and rich thematic collections (paleontology, archeology, history, ethnology ...). You can enjoy a walk or bike ride on the beautiful promenade along the Sava River, which leads from Poloj to the sugar factory. Also do not miss to see the main town square where there is a monument to the first soccer ball in Croatia and the stadium of the First Soccer Ball in Croatia. The Golden Thread Road is a new and unique tourist content that connects Županja and surrounding places - Štitar, Babina Greda, Kruševica, Cerna, Šiškovce, Gradište, Bošnjake, Drenovce, Vrbanja into a unique tourist destination. In addition to peace, quiet and the beautiful Slavonian plain, Golden Thread Road offers traditional local delicacies and specialties such as Slavonian Kulen, refreshing drops of homemade plum brandy, all with the story of cheerful and always hospitable hosts… Welcome to Županja and Slavonia!
