Brtonigla Coat of Arms

Brtonigla is a picturesque little village in the county of Istria in Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the Istrian peninsula halfway between Novigrad and Buje. It is situated on a hill surrounded by vineyards and olive groves and has a population of 1,500 inhabitants. It was first mentioned in the 13th century called Ortonegro, which derives from the Roman name for the black garden, because of the color of the soil around the town. Brtonigla is typical for Istria, and it consists of vineyards, old olive groves, the various paths that lead to the lush meadows and dense forests. The inhabitants are mostly engaged in agriculture, olive oil and wine production, and lately in tourism. It is ideal for a slightly different type of vacation in unspoiled nature surrounded by peace, tranquility, clean air and delicious local food. The nearby town of Umag offers additional amenities for visitors to this part of Istria.
