Matulji is a small town and municipality in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in Croatia. It is located in the interior of the hinterland of Opatija that is only a few kilometers away. It was first time mentioned in written records in the mid 17th century. It was named after the family name that was originally reported as Matuglia, as is often the case with the name of other smaller towns and hamlets of the area. Matulji has a population of 10,000 inhabitants who are mainly engaged in the craft industry and small enterprises. Thanks to the immediate proximity of the sea and popular tourist destination Opatija, it is turning slowly to tourism.
