Žirje Info
The island of Žirje is one of the largest islands of the Šibenik archipelago (total surface is around 15 km2). Although it is large compared to surrounding islands, less than a hundred permanent residents live on it. The island is 22 km away from the city of Šibenik. The name of the island most likely comes from the word acorn (“žir”) since in the past the Mediterranean oak used to cover the majority of the island. Today, Žirje is mostly covered by maquis which is ideal for grazing goats and sheep. The main crops on the island of Žirje are grapes, plums, olives, figs, and almonds. The main settlement of the island bears the same name - Žirje (fishing village).
Žirje has a very interesting history. It has been inhabited since ancient times and in the 6th century, Byzantian emperor Justinian constructed two fortress - Gradina and Gušterna. Later, Žirje was owned by Benedictians, Mletians and the Turks.
Žirje is surrounded by 17 islands and reefs and it has 29 bays. The highest point of the island is Kapić (131 meters high). On the island are registered four monuments that are cultural heritage including the church of St. Mary from the 15th century and the fortresses of Gradina and Gušterna from the 6th century. Like other inhabited islands in Dalmatia, Žirje also has its fishermen's festival, games of islanders (sports and entertainment manifestation), and traditional local festivities for the feast of the Assumption (“Velika Gospa”).
The island of Žirje has beautiful unspoiled nature, wild flora, crystal clear blue sea, and many attractive beaches and bays such as Mala Stupica, Velika, Mala, and Koromačna. Žirje offers the opportunity for peaceful holidays on one of the many hidden beaches and coves, but for those looking for active holidays, we recommend cycling, trekking, kayak riding, and walking.
Although it is remote, the island of Žirje is well connected with the mainland (Šibenik). It is linked by express boat line and by a ferry line which runs several times per day. If you are looking for accommodation, we recommend staying in a private apartment, holiday home, or room.
