Vrbnik is a small island town and municipality in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar county in Croatia. It is situated on a cliff that rises steeply fifty meters above sea level on the eastern side of the island Krk opposite New Vinodolski. It was first mentioned in the 12th century in a Glagolitic document, however, discovered archaeological traces are indicating that the area was inhabited since the Neolithic Age. It was inhabited by ancient Japodi and Liburnians, followed by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Most of the medieval history of Vrbnik is closely connected with Krk dukes Frankopans, who have origins from this little town. Inhabitants are traditionally engaged in fishing and agriculture, primarily in the fertile Vrbnik field, where is produced world-famous indigenous wine Žlahtina. Tourism is slowly developing and, except in a small hotel, accommodation can be found in many high-quality apartments and rooms as part of private family accommodation.
