Otočac is a picturesque town in Lika Senj county in Croatia.
It is located in the north part of Lika, in Gacka river valley between the mountains of Mala Kapela and Velebit.
Fertile valley of river Gacka and Otočac was inhabited since prehistoric times, as witnessed by the numerous objects found from the Illyrian tribes Japoden who lived here.
The place was first mentioned in the famous Baška tablet from the 12th century and the 13th century was under the administration of the Frankopans.
An interesting fact is that the city was never conquered by the Turks, who have for centuries posed a threat.
It was an important defensive stronghold until the 18th century.
After passing of the Turkish threat, Otočac started to develop commerce, trade, forestry, wood, and textile industry.
Today Otočac has about 10,000 inhabitants and slowly draws tourists from around the world for its pristine nature and river Gacka, the unique and cleanest river in Europe.
