Gospić is a city and the seat of Lika-Senj county and Gospić-Senj Diocese in Croatia. It is located in the Croatian highlands, in the central part of the historical region of Lika at the foot of the Velebit mountain at 562 meters above sea level. In the historical sources, Gospić was mentioned for the first time as a settlement in its current form in the early 17th century under the name of Gospojina. Then it was a small village which has several times been abandoned because of the constant Turkish threat and robbery. After the termination of the Turkish threat in the late 18th and the 19th century, Gospić is rapidly developing and becoming administrative center of Lika. Today Gospić has about 12,000 inhabitants, who are mostly engaged in agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry, and recently is being developed tourism thanks to the untouched nature, rich flora, and fauna, rich and varied Lika cuisine.
