Zadar Zadar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia. Located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, it is center of the Zadar County and northern Dalmatia. The city has about 75,000 inhabitants and is the fifth-largest city in Croatia. Zadar is an ancient city full of historical and cultural sites. Continuously inhabited for at least three thousand years, it had a long, turbulent and dynamic history. The first records show that the Zadar occurs in the 4th century before Christ as a settlement of the Illyrian tribe Liburni - when was named Jader. During its long history, it changed name from Idassa, Jadera, Diadora, Zara to the present name Zadar. From all historical periods have been preserved many churches and monuments in many historic styles.
