Zadar Coat of Arms

Zadar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia. Located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, it is the centre of Zadar County and northern Dalmatia. The city has about 75,000 inhabitants and is the fifth-largest city in Croatia. Zadar is an ancient city full of historical and cultural sites — continuously inhabited for at least three thousand years, it has had a long, turbulent and dynamic history. The first records show that Zadar occurs in the 4th century BC as a settlement of the Illyrian tribe Liburni, and during its long history the name changed from Idassa, Jadera, Diadora, Zara to the present name Zadar. From all historical periods, many churches and monuments in many historic styles have been preserved.
