Ilok is a charming historic town in Slavonia in the far east of Croatia, situated on the gentle slopes of Fruška Gora above the Danube River and surrounded by idyllic rolling hills and vineyards. The area of the town of Ilok has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, as evidenced by numerous finds from prehistoric times. The Romans were also here and they built the border fortress Cuccium because the Danube River was the border of the Roman Empire. Ilok's golden age was in the 15th century when it was owned by the nobleman Nikola of Ilok, when the city core was fortified with walls that are largely preserved today. In the 17th century, the princely family Odescalchi acquired the property, which renovated the old medieval castle, modernized viticulture and built a wine cellar. One of the biggest tourist attractions is the Ilok Castle (Odescalchi Castle), which is very well preserved and offers unforgettable panoramic views of the Danube and the Vojvodina plains. An unmissable destination is the sanctuary, church and monastery of St. John of Capistrano, which is located in the very center of the old town and was founded by the Franciscans in the 14th century.
