Nova Gradiška is a town in Brod-Posavina County, set in the Slavonian Posavina region between the slopes of Mount Psunj to the north and the fertile plain of the Sava River to the south. Known as "the youngest Croatian town", it was founded in 1748 as part of the Military Frontier and has preserved to this day its distinctive late-Baroque grid of streets and squares. It lies about forty kilometres from Slavonski Brod, the county's largest city, and roughly an hour and a half by car from Zagreb along the A3 motorway. Calm, green and welcoming, Nova Gradiška is an ideal starting point for discovering an authentic, still-undiscovered Slavonia.
History and sights of Nova Gradiška
The heart of the town is the spacious King Tomislav Square, dominated by the Church of St. Teresa of Ávila — a late-Baroque building begun in 1754, with a distinctive pyramidal bell tower and exceptional acoustics. Another landmark is the Art Nouveau corner house Paun (the Peacock) from 1880, crowned by a tin peacock that has become a symbol of Nova Gradiška. Also worth seeing are the Main Guard building with its characteristic "bolte" arcades, once a courthouse and prison, and the Town Museum set in the historic core. The town's rich past — from its founding on the Military Frontier to its suffering and successful defence in the Homeland War — is preserved in numerous monuments and a carefully maintained old centre.

Nova Gradiška is also known for its well-kept green spaces. The city park was laid out in the style of French gardens and, in the early 20th century, redesigned as an English landscape park; it is home to the Three Graces fountain, the work of sculptor Vinko Fabris from 1978. A promenade of town curiosities runs along the Šumetlica stream, perfect for a relaxed stroll, while architectural gems such as the late-19th-century grammar school and Art Nouveau townhouses testify to the progressive spirit of this Slavonian town.
