Pakrac info

Tourist info Pakrac

Pakrac is a small town in Požega-Slavonia County, set on the banks of the Pakra River beneath the slopes of Mount Psunj, in the heart of continental Croatia. The county seat, the town of Požega, lies about forty kilometres away, while Zagreb is roughly an hour and a half by car. Pakrac has a rich history reaching back to the Middle Ages, when one of Croatia's oldest mints operated here, through the Baroque era under the Janković family, all the way to its suffering in the Homeland War and the restoration that continues to this day.

History and sights of Pakrac

The heart of the town is the Janković Manor Complex, a Baroque urban core built by the Counts Janković of Daruvar during their century of ownership over the Pakrac estate. Nearby stands the Old Town Hall from 1771, one of the oldest preserved buildings in town, which today houses the Tourist Board on the ground floor and an exhibition of military and wartime history upstairs. Not far from the town, on the slopes of Psunj, lie the remains of the medieval Čaklovac fortress, once held by the Knights Templar in the 12th and 13th centuries. History lovers will also enjoy the Pakrac Town Museum, housed in the Small Janković Manor, where the Slavonian banovac coin, minted right here in Pakrac in the mid-13th century, is kept. Every autumn the town comes alive for the Slavonian Banovac Fair, an event dedicated to local tradition and rural development.

Nature and excursions around Pakrac

Just ten minutes' drive from the centre lies the Omanovac recreation area on the slopes of Psunj (655 m above sea level), with well-kept hiking trails, panoramic views over the town and a mountain lodge that has several times been named the finest in Croatia. In winter its ski and sledding slopes are open, while in the warmer months it is ideal for a picnic and outdoor recreation. Nearby you will also find the Ranch M&M and Matkovac picnic spots, popular with visitors seeking peace far from the city bustle. Guests who want to combine their holiday with home cooking and a rural atmosphere may consider agrotourism, an increasingly popular form of accommodation in this part of Croatia.
