Ugljan Info
Tourist guide island of Ugljan
The island of Ugljan is located next to the island of Pašman in the Zadar archipelago. It is often called a green island because it is covered by pine trees, Mediterranean greenery, vineyards, olive trees, and woods, combined with a clear sea and untouched nature (60-70% of the island is covered by vegetation). As it is close to Zadar, it was always a very popular destination for tourists looking for peace and tranquility. One of Ugljan’s main characteristics are attractive beaches and hidden bays.
The most popular destinations on Ugljan are small tourist and fisherman settlements of Preko, Kali, Ugljan, and Kukljica. The island has been inhabited since the stone age and today it has a population of more than 7000 inhabitants.
The best beaches on Ugljan are Ćinta bay, Batalaža beach in Kali, sandy Jaz beach in Preko, Velika Sabuša beach in Kukljica, Mostir beach in settlement of Ugljan and Južna Luka in Muline. Visit the small island of Školjić (or Galevac) which is only 85 meters away from Preko, and on which is the monastery of St. Paul from the 15th century. Although the highest point of Ugljan is Šćah, the peak of St. Mihovil (263 meters high) with an old fortress is more popular. From the top, you can enjoy remarkable panoramic views over the Zadar archipelago and islands of Pašman, Dugi Otok, Sestrunj, and Iž.
Ugljan is a perfect destination for those looking for active holidays - biking, hiking, kayaking, scuba diving or just swimming in a crystal clear Adriatic sea. As three Croatian national parks (Kornati, Paklenica, and Krka) and two nature parks (Telaščica bay and Vrana lake) are close to Ugljan, the island is the ideal location for exploring the Zadar area and archipelago.
The island is accessible since there are frequent daily ferry lines and boat lines from Zadar port (Gaženica). Also, it is connected with the island of Pašman by a bridge, offering more opportunities for exploring and active holidays. Accommodation offered by private renters prevails on the island (apartments, holiday homes, rooms...).
