The island of Šolta is situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago of the Adriatic, between the islands of Brac and Drvenik Veli, and only 9 nautical miles south of the city of Split. Its area is 58 km2 and has a population of just over 1,700 inhabitants. Šolta is a typical Adriatic island, covered by lush Mediterranean vegetation, cultivated fields, olive groves, and vineyards. It has beautiful small bays and beaches and is surrounded by crystal clear waters of the blue Adriatic Sea. Climate is very pleasant with warm and sunny summers and mild winters which allows visits of tourists throughout the year. On the island of Šolta there are eight places: Stomorska, Nečujam, Rogač who is also the ferry port for the entire island, Maslinica, Gornje Selo, Grohote, Srednje Selo and Donje Selo. The island is very accessible and well connected by ferry with Split. During the summer season, it has eight daily connections, and the journey takes less than an hour. The economy of the island is based on vineyards, olive and fruit growing, fishing and tourism. Most of the locals have their own vegetable gardens, vineyards, and olive groves, and most of them also offer the services of accommodation in their private homes.
