Tourist info Split

Split Split is the second-largest city in Croatia with 170 000 inhabitants and is the largest city, cultural, economic and tourist center of Dalmatia. It is located on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea between Kaštela bay and Split channel. Split is one of the oldest cities in Croatia. Although traditionally considered a little more than 1,700 years old, when the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 305 AD built the world-famous Diocletian's palace, the city is in fact founded as a Greek colony Aspalathos in the 4th century BC, that is more than 2,400 years ago. Because of its long and rich history and cultural heritage, in the 1979 historic center of Split with Diocletian's palace was included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Split became an unavoidable destination for many tourists who spend their entire vacation in the city or who are just passing through because the Split port is the starting point for most of the central Dalmatian islands of Brač, Hvar, Vis, and Korčula. As for accommodation, Split abounds with affordable accommodation including apartments which are offered at every turn, so you can spend your vacation in the city center in the ancient stone houses or modern apartments along the beach. Walking through the historic center of the city it is possible to travel through time and watch the perfect preserved examples of ancient architecture like Peristyle and Diocletian's cellars, medieval Romanesque churches and Gothic palaces and the Renaissance portals of noble houses. When you get tired of city noise and crowds of tourists, there is the Marjan hill, with its forests, trails for running, hiking and cycling, and recreational facilities. Split is full of beaches, from the famous sandy beach Bačvice to stone isolated oasis around the entire Marjan peninsula where you can relax and enjoy in the true Mediterranean atmosphere.
