Murter is a small tourist town and seat of the municipality Murter-Kornati on island Murter in central Dalmatia, Croatia. It covers the northwestern side of the island and is about 10 nautical miles away from Kornati islands. Murter has about 2,000 permanent residents, including about 30 permanent inhabitants of the Kornati islands. Murter island was inhabited in prehistoric times and in the time of the Illyrians, Liburnians, and Romans, who lived on the island, and they have left clear traces of their presence. The architectural remains of Roman buildings, port facilities, and mosaics speak of the importance of the island in ancient times. Once mainly a fishing village, Murter today is more oriented towards tourism thanks to the untouched nature, beautiful beaches, clear waters, and National Park Kornati. In the center of town, there is one hotel, but by far most of the accommodation is offered in private apartments, rooms and holiday homes. Almost every house in Murter has apartments and rooms fully equipped for the reception of guests.
