Tourist info Murter - Betina
Betina is a small tourist settlement on the island of Murter, seven kilometers away from Tisno, where the mobile bridge connects the island of Murter with the mainland. The island of Murter is the largest island of the Šibenik archipelago and is also the closest to the mainland. The island is easily accessible for all tourists and visitors. It has been inhabited since the time of Illyrian (Liburna tribe), and the entire island is full of remains of Roman villas, mural paintings, and mosaics from the time of the Roman Empire. The name Betina comes from the Celtic word "bet" which in translation means "mouth" - and describes the look of a naturally formed port of Betina, which has protected from ancient times ships of storms and winds. The settlement is under protection as a cultural monument because of its very well preserved historical core and therefore it is named "the beauty of the Mediterranean architecture". Although it is only 1 - 2 km away from the largest town of Murter, Betina is administratively belonging to the municipality of Tisno. About 800 permanent residents live in Betina, traditionally engaged in agriculture (growing of olives and figs) and fishing. The settlement is also well-known for its shipbuilders who have a long tradition of building wooden boats. Recently tourism is developing and more people are providing accommodation services in their family homes. In the settlement, there is the marina Betina which is suitable for the development of nautical tourism especially due to the vicinity of Kornati islands. We recommend all guests to visit the Museum of Wooden Naval Architecture, the church of St. Franjo, Plitka Vala, where the remains of the ancient Villa Rustica and the Old Romanesque cemetery were found, the church of St. Rok on the hill of St. Rok with beautiful views. Nearby are also Gradina and the remains of the ancient city of Colentum with old villas and Roman remains. Here is also the old Christian church of Our Lady of Gradine from the 6th century. On the small island of Moster, only half a nautical miles from Betina are the remains of the Franciscan monastery from the 12th century. Betina and the island of Murter abound with beautiful natural beaches that are characterized by exceptional sea purity. They are suitable for families with children, and you can choose between sandy and pebble beaches. The most famous are Plitka Vala, Kosirina, Zdrače, Bisage and Slanica in nearby Murter. If you are spending your holiday in Betina, you can enjoy great opportunities for one-day trips to the National Parks of Kornati and Krka and the nearby UNESCO city of Šibenik. You can also explore the island of Murter which offers numerous beaches, coves, and viewpoints.
