Tourist info Kaprije
Kaprije is a small island in the Šibenik archipelago, about an hour by ferry from Šibenik. Its area is 7 km2 and has a population of 150 permanent residents in the singular village on the island, which also bears the name of Kaprije. The island was named after a Mediterranean plant caper which is used as a known Mediterranean spice, which once covered the entire island. In the 14th and 15th century the island belonged to the noblemen from Šibenik, like most other nearby islands. The island was first settled by residents of the surrounding area of Šibenik and fleeing refugees from the Turkish invasion in the 16th and 17th centuries. Then it was built St.Peters church. After the end of the Turkish threat and invasions, refugees return to Šibenik, but some of them continue to live on the island and develop this wonderful little place. Kaprije has a post office, grocery store, several cozy bars, and a couple of restaurants with fresh fish and excellent dishes that are especially appreciated by yachtsmen. Most of the villagers are still engaged in traditional occupations like agriculture, fishing and sailing, especially wine and olive oil production. Recently on the island is developing tourism, and its friendly hosts will provide you with quality service of private accommodation in apartments and rooms and they will do everything to make you feel at home. Cars are not allowed on the island, so it is truly guaranteed a break from the noise, smog and large crowds. Kaprije cove located in the southwestern part of the island is naturally protected from almost all winds and is a popular destination for many sailors who after a full day of cruising through the neighboring Kornati island, anchor here for safe sleep.
