Poreč Poreč is a city and a popular tourist destination in the county of Istria in Croatia. It is located on the west coast of Istria in the beautiful harbor. The Old town, historical center of the city is situated on the peninsula, while the newer part of town, hotel, and tourist complexes are located along the coast north and south of the old town. This is the second-largest city in Istria, after Pula, with about 17,000 residents. Poreč has been inhabited since ancient times. In the 2nd century BC on the peninsula was raised Roman castrum, and later was awarded the status of the city and city walls around the old town were built. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Poreč came under Byzantine rule. In the 6th century was built an imposing Euphrasian Basilica, which was named after Bishop Euphrasius. The basilica is now included on the UNESCO World Heritage list as the only completely preserved monument of that time in the world. From the 13th until the end of the 18th century, Poreč was under Venetian rule. In that time, the city was developing, becoming a trading center of this part of Istria.
