Cres is a famous tourist town in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar county in Croatia. It is situated in a large natural bay on the west side of the island Cres. It is the biggest town on the island of Cres with about 2,500 inhabitants and it is also the administrative center of the whole island. This area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and at the place of today's town in ancient times was an old fort Crepsa, after which the city of Cres got its name. Because of its location in a protected bay, over the centuries marine, fisheries, trade, and shipbuilding were developing. The locals have traditionally lived from olive growing, as evidenced by the numerous old olive groves throughout the island. In the mid 19th century, first visitors and tourists from Opatija riviera came to Cres, therefore, the city has a long tradition in tourism.
