Lovran is a small tourist town and municipality in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar county in Croatia. It is located on the west coast of the Kvarner bay, at the foot of the southern slopes of the mountain of Učka. It is only 6 km away from Opatija and 20 km from the city of Rijeka. It was named after the aromatic laurel trees that excellently grows in wild in the surrounding area. Lovran was first mentioned in the 7th century under the ancient name Lauriana and it is considered to be founded by the ancient Romans. During the Middle Ages, Lovran was an important trade and maritime center of the northern Adriatic as well as an important center of shipbuilding. In the late 19th and early 20th century, like in neighboring Opatija, tourism started developing in Lovran. At that time, construction of numerous villas, summer houses, and hotels also started and Lovran quickly became one of the favorite resorts of the whole of Central Europe. At the same time, the beautiful promenade was built - Lungomare, 12 kilometers long romantic promenade that connects Lovran with Opatija.
