Sinj is a town in the heart of the Dalmatian hinterland (Dalmatinska Zagora), set on the edge of the fertile Sinj plain through which the clear, cold Cetina River flows, surrounded by the rugged mountains of Kamešnica, Svilaja and Dinara. It lies about thirty kilometres — a little over half an hour's drive — from Split and the sea. This proud knightly town is famous the world over for two symbols — the Sinjska Alka and Our Lady of Sinj — and its rich history, strong traditions and warm hospitality make it one of the most fascinating destinations in inland Dalmatia.
The Sinjska Alka is a knights' tournament held every first Sunday of August in memory of the town's celebrated victory over a far larger Ottoman army in 1715. At full gallop along a 160-metre course, the alkar aims his lance at a small iron ring — the alka — and in 2010 the tournament was inscribed on UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Alongside the Alka, in mid-August tens of thousands of pilgrims from around the world arrive for the Feast of the Assumption (Velika Gospa) and the pilgrimage to the miraculous Our Lady of Sinj, whose painting is kept in the church on the main town square. At the start of the racecourse stands the striking Monument to the Alkar, the work of sculptor Stipe Sikirica.
Above the town rises the old fortress on Kamičak hill, offering views over the Sinj plain and the surrounding mountains. History and heritage lovers should visit the Museum of the Sinjska Alka, part of the Alkar Court complex and opened in 2015 for the tournament's 300th anniversary, as well as the Cetina Region Museum with its valuable archaeological collection tracing life here from prehistory to the present. Over the centuries Sinj changed rulers many times — from the medieval Croatian state through Ottoman and Venetian rule to Austrian administration — and each era left its mark on the town's cultural fabric.
The Cetina River is the heart of this region — from its source beneath Dinara, across the Sinj plain and on to the canyon and its mouth at Omiš, it offers endless opportunities for rafting, kayaking and enjoying unspoiled nature. Nearby lie Lake Peruća, the beauty spots around the source of the Cetina, and Dinara, Croatia's highest peak and a paradise for hikers.
