Žminj is a small picturesque village and municipality in the county of Istria in Croatia. It is located in the center of the Istrian peninsula at the top of a 380-meter high hill. Žminj municipality consists of 33 small villages that are scattered in the surrounding area. The area was inhabited since prehistoric times and it was an important traffic hub because here passed ancient roads to the old city of Pazin, Vodnjan, Pula, and others. From the 12th century, Žminj was part of the Pazin county and throughout the Middle Ages, it was a rich trading center for agricultural products, wine, and wood. Today Žminj and its surroundings have about 3,500 residents who are still engaged in traditional activities, agriculture, olive and wine production, and cattle breeding. Recently, tourism is developing, especially in the surroundings of Žminj, where the old traditional Istrian stone houses are converted into modern holiday homes with swimming pool.
