Peroj is a small fishing and agricultural village in the county of Istria in Croatia. It is situated on the west coast of Istria, only one kilometer away from the coast and beautiful beaches. Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Vodnjan which is only 6 kilometers away. Peroj was a well-known resort back in Roman times when it was called Praetoriolum (Casale Petriolo). After the plague in the 16th century, the settlement was deserted until re-settlement in the 17th century, when 13 families of the Montenegrin Orthodox religion came to Peroj. Today Peroj has a population of 800 inhabitants most of whom are descendants of 13 Montenegrin families and who have maintained their culture and customs. Traditionally residents of Peroj were engaged in agriculture, olive oil and wine production and fishing, but today tourism is rapidly developing. Local people offer accommodation in high quality and comfortable apartments, rooms and holiday homes. Long pebbles beaches, which stretch along the coast, are suitable for families with children.
